16. The Screaming Snowman

‘I’ll call some other Wayfarers in. We’ll have to arrest Catriona and get our hands on those props,’ said Gretel. We were back in the corridor outside Adam’s room, coming up with a plan of action. My legs were weak and my head was buzzing, but I couldn’t sit down. There was just too much to do.

‘But this is crazy, right?’ Gretel continued. ‘I mean, I know you and your dad have been seeing the magic surrounding Catriona, but I really believed it was because she was a clinger. I just can’t see her as a criminal mastermind, no matter how hard I try.’

‘I dunno.’ Greg had bought another apple and was making short work of it. ‘She was possessed by one of the worst women I’ve ever known. I mean, I was right in the middle of it all at the time, pretending to be part of Bella Foyle’s gang, and Bella was cold. Just …’ Greg shivered. ‘ … just horrible. Maybe the experience affected Catriona in a worse way than we thought.’

‘Maybe,’ I conceded. ‘It sure seems that way. But we don’t have time to psychoanalyse her right now. We just need to stop the crazy weather and make sure she doesn’t kill anyone else. So while Gretel’s off getting the rest of the Wayfarers together, me and you can head back to Riddler’s Edge, Greg. We need to know what’s going on back there. Plus, me and Dad have to go see my granny.’

‘You think she’ll actually help, though?’ Gretel wondered.

‘I’ll make her,’ I said with grim determination. ‘I don’t care how important this museum theft she’s dealing with is – this is more important. She’ll help.’

Greg looked unconvinced. ‘Your dad’s probably left her a million messages about this already. Maybe she’s ignoring him.’

‘Why would she do that?’ I massaged my temples, feeling a headache coming on. ‘This is an emergency. I know my dad’ll have been very clear about that.’

‘It’s like when you’re a kid, and crisps and sweets seem awesome because you hardly ever have them,’ Greg said, ‘but then you grow up and can have them whenever you want. So they’re not a big deal anymore. Except then you overindulge, so you try to stay away from them for a while.’

‘What are you saying?’ Gretel looked thoroughly perplexed, and I can’t say I blamed her.

‘I’m saying that just like I know I’ve eaten way too much junk food in my life and it’s time to give it a break, maybe your granny’s had too many emergencies, and so she’s trying to go cold turkey on them for a while.’ He rubbed his stomach. ‘I’m not sure that my analogy worked but it has made me hungry. Apples and lollipops just aren’t cutting it.’

‘We’ll get you something to eat,’ I told him. ‘But that’s not all we need to do. We have to track down everyone who was there when that mirror broke. They could all have those shards in them.’

‘I’ll get some people working on that, too,’ Gretel promised.
